The year of 2004 saw Izhevsk being Capital Culture of Volga region. Within this program, Izhevsk Republican Centre for Folk Arts, Culture and Leisure held a traditional festival of ethnofuturism and folklore art. It was called Yumshan after an Udmurt name for a festive gathering of people in villages that also involves ancient rites.

Izhevsk electronic music label Kama records was commissioned to release a special festival CD compilation that comes It is based on the work of Sergey Kungurov, folklore specialist, composer and performer on traditional and forgotten Udmurt instruments. His recordings of traditional songs and his own compositions on krez and kuhbyz were given treatments by Izhevsk electronic musicians signed to Kama records. Stylistically diverse, they can be seen as both remixes and original tracks that use samples of Kungurov's playing. The result comes out as a refreshing futuristic expansion of Udmurt traditional folk music treasury. It also reveals the local electronic scene as an engine of the innovative music culture from today's Izhevsk.

For Kama records, this project has been the continuation of the work with folklore material. New Song of An Ancient Land is Kama's original project for releasing Udmurt authentic folklore in the form of original field recordings of family singing and studio treatments such as presented on this CD.
